She, her husband and their five children were displaced to the Acholi Quarter fourteen years ago due to the war in the north. Her father and brothers were killed in the conflict. When she first came, life was difficult and they had no food. She had to work in the quarry to support her family. Florence has now also taken in her deceased sister-in-law s three children. She makes beads to support the family. She has attended PHH adult literacy classes, received vocational training in tailoring and a grant for a sewing machine. In the North, Molly's brother was abducted by the rebels and taken into the bush; having now spent 20 years in the Acholi Quarter, she has never seen or heard from him. On the way, her child, grandchild and her sister were killed and Helen herself nearly died of illness and hunger. Helen is now 44 years old. She has five children and also cares for her grandson, whose father passed away. Helen works in the stone quarry, despite her illness, where a day's work earns her less than a dollar. Although she also makes paper beads to supplement this income, she can only afford to eat once daily. During her third pregnancy in 2005, he deserted her, and she was left to raise their children alone. She worked at the quarry to try to support her family. Doreen plans to start her own business, and believes that a second hand clothing store would be successful. Josephine came to the Acholi Quarter 10 years ago to escape the northern conflict after the rebels burned her house, killing her father and brother and leaving her alone as the last surviving member of her family. Josephine now lives in the Acholi Quarter and is divorced, supporting her children by herself with only the income she earns making beads and working in the stone quarry. She is also being put through vocational training for tailoring by Project Have Hope.
